The Engineering Design Process

In the workforce, STEM professionals typically work on teams to complete projects. To complete your challenge, you will work on a STEM team.

Engineers use a systematic approach to problem solving called the engineering design process. You will use this process to address your real-world challenge. Watch the following videos to learn more about the process and approach engineers use to solve problems. Think about what they consider when planning and developing their solutions. How can you apply their process to your challenge?

An expanded version of the engineering design process that engineers use is outlined on pages 7-18 of your Engineering Portfolio. With your STEM team, complete steps 1-4 on page 7 now, and continue to use your Engineering Portfolio to guide your work as you move forward.

Teacher Note

Before beginning this activity, divide your class into STEM teams of 3-4 students each. Students will need to work in STEM teams for the remainder of the lesson. (See Appendix C for more information on forming STEM teams.)
